Tips for Window Maintenance

A person completing window maintenance

Proper maintenance is essential to keep your windows looking and functioning at their best. Luckily, vinyl windows don't require nearly as much upkeep as those with wood frames. However, there are still some window maintenance tasks you will want to make sure you complete every so often.

  1. Window Cleaning

Yes, cleaning windows look great, but keeping them clean regularly makes it easier to spot any cracks, scratches, or other issues that may need to be addressed. It also helps slow the normal wear and tear of low-emissivity (low-E) glass. Regular cleaning reduces the impact of the elements on the outside of your windows and cleaning the vinyl frames can improve their longevity.

In addition to cleaning the panes and the frames of your windows, you should clear out the tracks. This helps ensure that the window operates smoothly. The more that dirt and grime build up, the harder they will be to remove.

You should clean your windows inside and out, including the tracks, at least twice a year. You can wipe down the inside panes more frequently if you would prefer, but this is generally the minimum. If there are a lot of pollen-producing trees near your home, it may be a good idea to clean the exterior of your windows three times a year instead.

  1. Examine and Fix Caulking

While you are cleaning your windows, pay attention to the caulking/sealant that keeps the edges of your windows watertight. If you notice any issues, contact us to resolve them right away. Otherwise, water may leak in from the outside, and air leaks can lower your home’s energy efficiency and increase your electric bill. If you notice any cracks, holes, or seams around the edges of your windows, be sure to seal these with caulk.

  1. Yearly Inspection

Once a year, thoroughly inspect the interior and exterior of your windows. This should go beyond the once-over you may do when cleaning. Be sure to check for leaks and sealant cracks as well as any cosmetic damage. Make sure you can operate your window easily including opening, closing, and locking it (if applicable). This type of preventive maintenance is less intense than it would be for wood windows since vinyl will not crack, chip, or peel like wood might. However, it's still a good idea to take note of any issues and address them sooner than later.

  1. Choose Low-Maintenance Windows

When selecting replacement windows, choosing high-quality vinyl windows can significantly reduce the amount of maintenance you need to do. This saves you time and effort. Our windows are also engineered to the highest standards and are less prone to the problems common in lower-quality wood windows. With so many styles to choose from, it's easy to find the perfect windows for your home's aesthetic.
