Window Cleaning Tips

Supplies for window cleaning

Keeping your windows clean lets in more natural light, gives you an unobstructed view of the outdoors, and helps your home look its best. For many people, windows are one of the trickiest parts of the home to clean. This is because streaking can sometimes be an issue or you may be worried about scratching the glass. This article includes some window cleaning tips that will help you keep your windows looking great.

What to Use for Window Cleaning

There are many different products available to clean your windows. For the most part, any glass cleaner will be fine. Some ammonia-based options dry quickly, so you shouldn't clean with these when it's sunny as this can increase streaking. If you prefer to make your own cleaning products, you can use one part white vinegar in ten parts warm water. Adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil can give this mixture a more pleasant aroma. You can also use water with a small amount of dish soap, although too much soap can leave a residue.

For wiping away the solution, you can use paper towels if this is your preference. However, some people notice that these can leave bits of lint on the window. If you've had this problem and are looking for a different option, a microfiber cloth can be a great choice. Its soft surface won't scratch your window and these reusable towels are more eco-friendly. Newspaper is also often recommended to avoid streaking. Just make sure you don't rub the newspaper on the frame. The wet print won't transfer to glass, but can stain other materials.

How to Clean Your Windows

Window World's windows are designed to be incredibly easy to operate and clean. You can slide the top and bottom sash of our double-hung windows inside so you can wipe down the interior and exterior. We recommend working from top-to-bottom and exterior-to-interior. A good tip is to clean one side of your windows vertically and the other horizontally. If there are streaks, this method will immediately let you know what side of the glass that the streaks are on. Use your preferred window cleaning solution and wipes to remove dust and dirt from the glass.

When Window Cleaning Isn't Enough

If you have had your windows for a long time or are noticing problems with their appearance and operation, cleaning may not be enough to fix the issue. At this point, it may be time to consider window replacement. Replacing your windows is a relatively simple improvement that can have a large impact. An added benefit is that newer windows, especially the ones we have available, may be easier to keep clean.
