Tips For Sliding Patio Door Maintenance

An example of sliding patio doors which would require some maintenance

Sliding patio doors are a common choice because they provide easy access to the outdoors and don't require as much space as hinged patio doors. No matter what type of patio door you choose, taking care of it is important. Maintenance helps ensure your door stays looking its best and also improves its longevity. For sliding doors in particular, there are some extra steps to take to ensure the track remains functional and your door is easy to open and close.

Here are some tips for maintaining your sliding patio door:

1. Keep the Glass Clean

Keeping the glass clean allows more natural light inside and improves the appearance of your patio doors. Glass can quickly start to show dirt and grime and keeping up with a regular cleaning schedule can help minimize this. You should clean your patio doors at about the same frequency as your windows: twice a year at a minimum and as needed if you notice they are getting dirty.

You can clean sliding patio doors the same way you clean your windows. Use a glass cleaner with your preferred wipe. Newspaper is great for reducing streaking, but be sure not to rub this on the vinyl frame of the patio door because it can stain.

One helpful tip is to wipe in one direction on the inside of your door and the opposite direction on the outside. For example, wipe horizontally inside and vertically outside. This way, you'll be able to easily identify what side streaks are on if they occur and can fix them more easily.

2. Clean the Frames

In addition to cleaning the glass, you want to make sure to address the frame at the same time. Instead of using glass cleaner, you can use soapy water on the frame. Vinyl frames are much easier to maintain than wood or metal, but it's still a good idea to avoid harsh cleaners so you don't damage the frame.

3. Clean the Tracks More Frequently

Sliding patio door tracks can easily start to have a build-up of debris, and this can affect the functionality of your door. We recommend cleaning these out once a month to minimize any issues.

First, use a vacuum to address any dust and loose debris. Then, use warm water with soap to wipe down the tracks and remove any more stubborn bits of dirt and dust. You can use a butter knife or other scraper to carefully remove any dirt that is stuck in hard to reach places. An old toothbrush is also helpful for this purpose.

4. Replace Parts As Needed

Sometimes, the rollers in your sliding patio door will need to be replaced. This can happen if they are damaged or worn down. If there is serious damage beyond the rollers, it may be better to just replace the entire door. This brings us to our next point.

5. Know When It's Time For Replacement

High-quality patio doors can last for a long time, but this doesn't mean you'll never need a new door. If the style is outdated, the door is impossible to open even after cleaning or replacing the rollers, or you're noticing condensation between the glass panes, it may be time for replacement.
