Your Guide to Window Parts

Window replacement can help transform the way your home looks. While you are shopping for new windows, there are a variety of different terms you may hear. These include references to the many different window parts. It can be helpful to have a basic understanding of this vocabulary during this process.

For this article, we will focus on the parts of a standard double-hung window, although these parts are pretty similar for other types. If you have any questions about a particular variety of windows, our team members are happy to help.

The parts of a double-hung window are:

Frame

The frame surrounds and supports the window. It includes three different parts: the head, sill, and jambs. The head is the horizontal portion at the top of the frame. The sill, sometimes called the stool, is the horizontal portion at the bottom of the window. We use a sloped sill to drain away any water quickly. The window will have two jambs, which are the vertical sections that connect the head and sill and complete the frame.

Sash

A sash is the moveable inner part of the window that holds the glass. You can move this portion up and down to open the window. A double-hung window has two sashes. The horizontal section where the upper sash and the lower sash meet is called the check rail and the other horizontal portions are called rails as well. With our double-hung windows, both sashes tilt inward so you can clean them easily.

Glass Panes

The panes are the glass portion of the window. This can be low-emissivity (low-E) glass for energy efficiency.

Jambliner

The jambliner is a strip on the side of the window that creates a snug fit for the sash in the frame. It holds the different window parts together.

Lift

The lift is the part that you use to move the sash. This allows you to open the window and let fresh air in.

Grilles

As an optional feature, you can add grilles to your window panes. These are thin lines of vinyl that make it appear like the sashes are made with multiple smaller panes instead of one large pane. You can customize the grid to fit your design preferences.

Screen

Our double-hung windows feature a built-in screen. This allows you to let air in while keeping pests out.
