Types of Windows

Multiple different types of windows

There are many different types of windows and it's important to find the ones that match your home's aesthetic. Understanding your options can help you make an informed decision.

Here are some of the most popular types of windows:

Single-Hung and Double-Hung

Single-hung windows have two panels within the frame, one on the top and one on the bottom. The upper sash is stationary whereas the bottom sash moves up and down.

Double-hung windows have a similar design to single-hung. The difference is that both the upper and lower sashes move, which can make cleaning easier. These are the most common choice among homeowners for replacement windows and they have a look that fits with nearly any type of decor.

You typically open casement windows using a crank mechanism and they swing out sideways. They are a great choice for maximizing natural light or if you want to be able to open your windows to let in fresh air.

Awning windows are similar to casement, but they hinge on the top so they open upwards instead of to the side. They swing on the outside of your home.

If you want your new window to act as a beautiful accent to your home's architecture, you should consider an arched window. These do not typically open or close and can be paired with other types of windows throughout your home. Arched windows add a classical feel and are an elegant choice.

Bay and Bow

Bay windows extend outwards from your home's exterior wall and are a lovely way to make a room feel more open. The panels fit together to create an angled enclosure. Bow windows are similar, but they create a curved space. For smaller areas, you can also try garden windows, which are a smaller version of bay windows and are perfect for creating a well-lit space for houseplants.

Sliding windows have one or more window frames that move horizontally along a track. These are a great choice for a contemporary look and offer an excellent balance between form and function.

Glass Block

If you want privacy while still letting in natural light, glass block windows are a good choice. These have a patterned design and are a great accent piece. They are most common in bathrooms but can be a great addition to any room in your house.
