Should You Choose the Same Window Style or Something New?
If it's time to replace your windows, you may be wondering whether you have to replace them with the same style, or if you can go in a new direction. The answer is that you absolutely can switch your window style during a replacement. However, there are some things to consider, and you may be limited by the dimension and shape unless you are undergoing a larger remodel.
When to Consider a New Window Style
Do you love the general look of your windows, but just want to upgrade to something more energy-efficient or fix an issue with the operation? Then you'll probably want to keep the same style. This is absolutely fine and is one of the more common choices for homeowners. New windows can still help improve the look and feel of your home, even if the style is the same.
On the other hand, if you find your current windows outdated or just want to try something new, picking a different style can help update your living space. In many cases, homeowners choose to change the style of their windows after a remodel or redesign, since the old window style may no longer match the aesthetics of the room.
If you want to see how a style may look before you commit to it, you can use our Design Center. This allows you to use photos of your own home and replace the windows virtually. You can also talk to one of our consultants to get their opinion and advice.
Limitations When Replacing Windows
While you aren't limited to choosing the same style when you get replacement windows, there are some things you'll need to consider.
These factors may influence the types of new windows you can consider:
Shape
Your new windows will need to be the same general shape as the old ones, with some margin of error depending on the frames. Most of our window types are rectangular, so this is relatively easy. However, you may not be able to fit architectural window shapes unless you pair them with a square window. If you are set on a new shape, you may be able to talk to a remodeling contractor who can adjust the window opening for you, although this depends on a variety of factors.
You'll also want to consider the dimensions of the window. For example, a double-hung window is typically taller than it is wide, whereas a horizontal sliding window is the opposite.
Size
You'll typically need to replace an existing window with one that is the same size. Again, if you do want to switch this up, such as adding a large picture window on a wall that currently has many smaller windows, you'll need to talk to a remodeler, as this is outside of the scope of a traditional window replacement. It's not impossible, but it is more involved than simply swapping out the same size of the window for a new style.
