Options for Window Privacy

A window with sheer curtains, a way to provide window privacy

There are many factors to consider when choosing new windows. You want to let in enough natural light but probably are also interested in preserving the privacy inside your home. The right balance between these two goals is likely different for various rooms. Luckily, there are many different options and it's definitely possible to obscure the view into your home while still maintaining a beautiful aesthetic.

Here are some of the options available for window privacy:

Strategic Window Placement

Where you place your windows impacts how easy or difficult it is for anyone outside to get a view of the indoors. If you want to preserve your privacy without changing the style of the window itself, placing it high on the wall might be beneficial.

Glass Options

Standard glass panes provide an unobstructed view. While this is great for areas where you want to be able to see outside, it's may not be ideal for rooms where you prefer more privacy. Depending on the style of window you are interested in, we have three main options for modifying the glass. Tinted windows have a uniform coating that obscures the view in while still allowing light to come through. We also have more decorative options such as obscure or rain-pattern glass. Acrylic block windows have a waved or crossed glass style.

Window Film

Unlike textured glass, film is added after your window has been installed, and you can typically apply it yourself. This may be helpful if you are not quite ready to replace an old window, but want to improve privacy. You can take window film off, although doing so may leave residue and affect the way the glass looks, so this may not be ideal. If you know you want to apply film to a new window, it's generally easier to select tinted glass instead.

Blinds, Shutters, or Curtains

Beyond the window itself, you can add blinds, shutters, or curtains to cover them when desired. One of the benefits of this is that you can enjoy a full view some of the time while still preserving privacy when you want it. If you are looking for flexibility, this may be a better option compared to modifying the glass. You can also choose a window covering that matches your home's aesthetic and there are many options available.

Items in Front of the Glass

A less common option, but one that can work in some circumstances, is to add items in front of the window to partially block the view. Plants can be a great choice for this, or you can use fake plants if that is easier. This is less effective than other methods for preserving window privacy, but it can work if you are less concerned about completely obscuring the view from outside.
